Wrecker Sam Lord lured ships to their doom with lanterns in the palm trees – and is still said to watch over his castle and hidden plunder.

This grand Georgian mansion of 1820 was built by Samuel Hall Lord, Barbados's most notorious wrecker. Legend has it he hung lanterns in the coconut palms so that sea captains mistook them for the harbour lights of Bridgetown and ran onto the reef, whereupon Lord and his men stripped the wrecks. The tale also claims he locked his wife Lucy in the cellar, and that hidden tunnels stuffed with plunder run down to the beach. Gutted by fire in 2010, the castle has been reborn as a resort, but stories of Sam's restless spirit on the grounds live on.
