Fort St. Catherine — St. George's · Bermuda · Fort

The fort's lower chambers belong to a ghost called George – so persistent that islanders attempted an exorcism in the 1970s.

Fort St. Catherine was first raised in 1614 on the headland where Bermuda's first shipwrecked colonists came ashore, and is the island's oldest and largest fort. For generations, a ghost known only as George is said to have haunted the lower chambers – visitors and staff have heard footsteps, murmuring and droning chants from the dark. George eventually became such a nuisance that exasperated Bermudians had an exorcism performed at the fort in the 1970s. It does not seem to have worked: to this day visitors report strange sounds from the old casemates.
