Jaén Street — La Paz · Bolivia · Alley

La Paz's best-preserved colonial lane is known simply as the street of ghosts.

The steep, cobbled Calle Jaén with its brightly coloured colonial houses is a museum quarter by day – but after dark the street changes character. Since colonial times it has been lined with deaths and misfortunes, and a plaque recalls the events that earned it the name 'street of the ghosts'. Here the condemned widow is said to wander weeping through the night, while duendes and shadow figures flicker in the doorways. For generations, neighbours have told of footsteps and laments rising from the empty street.
