Four priests failed to save the farmer, until a fifth bored a hole in the lead and broke the bargain.

In Berghem parish in Mark a farmer is said to have sold his soul to the devil. When the day of payment came he lay with a Bible on his chest while priests tried in vain to drive the power from him. Only the priest of Surteby proved strong enough; he bored a hole in the window lead and ordered the fiend out, whereupon the room filled with fire and brimstone and the farmer was freed.
