The lad covered eight miles in a moment with a kindly gentleman – but the recipient was aghast: the carriage had been the Fiend himself.

At Otterstad it was told of a farmhand sent on foot with a letter to Gothenburg, who got a ride from a kindly gentleman. When he arrived the same day the letter was written, the recipient was astonished, for such a journey was impossible. He warned the lad never to ride back, for the gentleman was the Fiend – and word soon came that a tanner had cut his own throat, the one the Fiend had truly come to fetch.
