In the new Jinsong housing estate in 1984, quarrels and furniture-moving sounded outside the doors at night – but every opened door found the stairwell empty.

In 1984 a rumour swept Beijing that drew crowds to the Jinsong housing estate: one of the new apartment blocks had become a ghost house. Residents told of plaintive weeping in the stairwell after dark, of ghost-lights flickering outside the windows and lamps blinking with nothing wrong in the wiring. The nights were worst: outside the doors, neighbours could be heard chatting, moving furniture, quarrelling and scolding children – but the moment a door opened, everything fell silent and the stairwell stood empty. An old woman is said to have met a white-clad, long-haired woman on the stairs; when the figure turned around, its front was another back, and the old woman fainted from terror. Pointed out as 'the building behind comedian Li Wenhua's', it became Beijing's most talked-about modern haunted house – and no explanation was ever given.
