Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña

Havanna · Kuba · Fortress

In the vast fortress above Havana harbour, phantom soldiers are said to march through dark passageways where shots and cries echo at night.

Completed in 1774, La Cabaña was Spain's largest fortress project in the Americas and still watches over the entrance to Havana harbour. The fortress has a dark history as a prison and execution ground, both in colonial times and through the upheavals of the 20th century. Visitors and guards tell of soldierly figures glimpsed in the dim vaulted corridors, of unexplained footsteps, cries and echoes of gunfire. Every evening the ceremonial cannon of El Cañonazo is fired – but the sounds heard afterwards, habaneros say, do not always come from the living.
