Červená Lhota Chateau

Jihočeský kraj · Czechia · Castle

The fairy-tale chateau in the lake owes its red colour, they say, to the blood of the lady the devil dragged out through the window.

The moated chateau of Červená Lhota, mirrored in its pond in South Bohemia, looks straight out of a fairy tale – but the legend behind the red facade is a bloody one. The lady Johanka is said to have blasphemed and tried to hurl the family's holy cross from a window, whereupon the devil himself burst in, seized her and tore out so violently that her blood spattered the wall. The stains could never be scrubbed away, and in the end the whole chateau was painted red to hide them. Historically the building did turn red in the early 17th century, when the name Červená (Red) Lhota first appears – and a woman in white is still said to appear by the pond.
