The royal castle in the Krivoklat forests west of Prague carries two legends pulling in opposite directions. The bright one is the bila pani, the white lady, who appears in the castle chapel: tradition names her Eliska Premyslovna, mother of Charles IV, who often prayed here for her son and whose spirit returns to watch over the castle. The dark one belongs to the Huderka tower. Krivoklat long served as a prison and torture chamber, and the name is said to come from the musicians made to play up in the tower — hudli — to drown out the screams of those being questioned below. The Englishman Edward Kelley, alchemist to Rudolf II, was also held here. He broke his leg attempting escape and died of the injury, and his spirit is said to have stayed in the walls.
