A cemetery long surrounded the old church at Porici, and there the legend of the mrtvi hraci — the dead gamblers — takes place. A man who could not keep away from cards went there one night and called out loudly over the graves for anyone who would take a hand with him. To his astonishment shadows rose from the cold earth, settled around him and dealt. The game stretched deep into the night, and with each new hand his unease grew until he understood who his opponents were and that they came from a place nobody returns from. With all the strength he had he tore himself free and ran. He survived the night but died some time afterwards, and the legend says his soul never found the rest he had been looking for.
