The devil served a stingy farmer — but when he tried to carry fence-stakes unbound, they slid every which way, and so he wept.

At Västra Tunhem it is told how the devil took service with a greedy farmer in exchange for claiming the farmer himself after a set time. Among his tasks he was to carry fence-stakes, and he loaded more on his shoulder than anyone could manage. But since he had not bound the tops together, the stakes slid off in all directions and he got nowhere. The farmer and the onlookers laughed, and the devil wept — and so the contract was annulled.
