Above the Saar valley near Felsberg stands the Teufelsburg, the 'Devil's Castle', built in the 14th century and long since a mighty ruin. Its name is explained by a legend: before a decisive duel, one of the castle's knights made a pact with the devil, selling his soul for victory. The price was duly collected – and according to the tale, you can still sometimes hear him screaming and raging in the ruin, where his soul is dragged back and forth between the castle and hell. The castle's first knight, Arno von Filsberg, also bore the nickname 'the Devil', which added to the site's reputation. Today the ruin is a lookout destination with sweeping views – and one of Saarland's few true haunted castles.
