A stranger gentleman joined the card table – but the exorcising priest had sinned enough to be taunted by the Evil One himself.

At Körkvis in Vänge, a resting place halfway for travellers from the south, cards were often played. Once, as the men drank and swore, a stranger gentleman joined them, but the wife sensed danger and sent for the priest. The Evil One reminded the priest of old sins – a stolen pretzel, a stolen book – but the priest turned the stolen book to his advantage and at last conjured him out as an eel through a hole in the window lead.
