A farmhand kept begging the Devil to flay him - and a watchman at his grave saved the skin from the Evil One.

At a deanery in Hitis served a farmhand who constantly swore and begged the Devil to flay him. The dean warned him in vain, and the farmhand died. After the burial the dean had another servant keep watch at the grave inside a drawn ring. At midnight the Devil dug up the coffin and flayed the corpse, but the watchman snatched the skin with a hooked staff and refused to give it back. The skin was later stuffed with straw.
