On Orust it was told how a great black hound kept wallowing in a farmer's grain. Only with an inherited silver button as a bullet could he bring the beast down, and it dissolved into mist at sunset – but the farmer fell ill at once and was dead within three days. People believed the hound had been the Evil One, punishing some grave crime. Another time the same dark power aided a woman in childbirth until she repented of her deed, whereupon torment came over her.
