The carpenter Johannes of Ryen is said to have told of an evening in his childhood when his father and a couple of others sat playing cards. The boy saw a great black dog come in and lie down beneath the table, but none of the grown-ups noticed anything. The child was so frightened he wept. After the dog had lain there a while, it went out the same way it had come.
