Casa de Tostado in Santo Domingo's colonial quarter was built in the early 16th century and now houses a museum. The house comes with a tragic love legend: a young officer, son of a French general, fell in love with Mariana, the daughter of the house. When he became entangled in a conspiracy and was hunted by the authorities, she hid him in the courtyard well – but the story ended in death and grief, and Mariana entered a convent. According to the legend his spirit still drifts through the patio and halls of the old stone house, searching for the beloved he never saw again.
