A farmhand in Nagu was given only a worn-out scythe by his stingy master. One Saturday evening he flung it down and swore ninety-nine devils could come and sharpen it. On Sunday morning, walking to church, he met old man after old man with horns on their heads and whetstones in hand. Silent, he passed them with the hymnbook in his pocket, and last came a lame wretch bearing half a millstone. On Monday only a sliver of the scythe remained.
