This crumbling eighteenth-century farmstead in the desert of Cabo de Gata was built by Dominican friars and in 1928 became the scene of the Níjar crime: bride Francisca fled on her wedding night with her cousin, who was shot dead by the groom's brother. The drama inspired Federico García Lorca's Blood Wedding. Today the farm is a lonely ruin where paranormal investigators claim to have recorded whispers and conversations with no source, and visitors describe dark shadows in the corridors and the feeling of being watched. Its desolate setting and bloody history have made the cortijo Almería's most storied location.
