In the art museum that was once Madrid's General Hospital, three mummified nuns were found – and night guards still hear footsteps and moans.

Spain's great museum of modern art, home to Picasso's Guernica, was built as Madrid's General Hospital in the eighteenth century, where the city's poor died by the thousand. Renovations in the 1980s and 90s produced grisly finds: skeletal remains, children's bones and three mummified nuns walled into the old chapel. Night guards have since reported moans in the corridors, slamming doors and nun-like figures in the garden; in 1997 one guard even filed an official complaint about the phenomena. During a staff ouija session, a spirit calling itself Ataúlfo is said to have predicted a tragedy that struck days later.
