Behind a heavy black iron gate in the private avenue Frochot near Pigalle stands a small town house from 1832 that Parisians have called haunted since the 1880s. The story that keeps the reputation alive is the murder of a chambermaid said to have been beaten to death with a poker in the stairwell in the early 1900s. The killer was never found, and since then her soul is said to be unable to leave the house. Neighbours speak of shrill screams at night and of the façade seeming to shift at the edge of vision as you pass. The address has had famous owners — the composer Victor Massé died here, paralysed — and later residents have described a palpable hostility in the rooms, a sense of not being welcome. The house is private, but the gate and façade are visible from the street.
