In December 1811 the sailor quarters around Ratcliffe Highway were shattered by two nocturnal massacres: seven people, including an infant, beaten to death in their homes. The panic gripped the whole country. The accused, seaman John Williams, was found hanged in his cell before trial — and London resorted to a medieval insurance: his corpse was paraded past the murder scenes and buried at the crossing of Cannon Street Road and Cable Street with a stake through the heart, so the spirit could not find its way home. In 1886 gas workers unearthed the skeleton, stake still in place; the publican on the corner reputedly kept the skull as a curiosity. A dark male figure is said to walk the junction at night — restless, as befits a soul whose rest was never meant to be peaceful.
