A medieval priory of the Trinitarian order once stood on Hounslow High Street. When Henry VIII's commissioners came to dissolve it, the abbot and his sacristan refused to sign. They were seized and burned at the stake in the middle of the village, outside The Bell inn, and the priory was levelled. Ever since, two figures in monastic habit have been reported in and around the church later raised on the site — moving slowly across the old priory ground and seeming not to see the living. The church has burned twice, most recently in an arson attack in 1943, which for many in Hounslow has only sharpened the sense that something here remains unresolved. The pair are said to appear most often at dusk, and always together.
