Guatemala City General Cemetery
Ciudad de Guatemala · Guatemala · Cemetery
At the capital's vast cemetery, opened in 1881, night watchmen see sharply outlined shadow figures gliding between the burial niches.
Guatemala City's great cemetery in Zone 3 was inaugurated in 1881 and is one of Central America's oldest and largest, with long rows of burial niches beneath ivy-clad arches. Cemetery workers and guards tell of laments and footsteps heard after nightfall, and of silhouettes and fully formed shadows appearing before the niches. By one of the arches, La Llorona herself is said to appear — the weeping woman who lures people toward the ravines at night. The site's reputation means few dare linger after closing time.
