Two journeymen bought a haunted smithy for a pittance – and trapped the devil's claws in the vice.

In Malmbäck parish there was a smithy so badly haunted at night that no one dared buy it. Two wandering journeymen bought it anyway for a pittance. At midnight the Evil One himself came in with horns, goat's legs and tail and made a racket among the tools. One journeyman dared him to put his claws in the vice, and when he did, the journeyman screwed it tight so the devil was caught fast and howled. Only after he swore never to appear again was he released, and after that the journeymen were left in peace.
