On this Sha Tin campus path, a weeping girl is said to turn around — revealing a braid where her face should be.

Since the 1970s, students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have told of the braided girl on the short footpath known as One-Braid Road. Legend says she was a young woman who fled to Hong Kong hidden on a freight train; leaping off near the campus, her long braid caught in the wheels and tore away her scalp and face. One evening a male student is said to have comforted a crying girl by the path and asked her to turn around — only to face a smooth blank with a single braid where her face should have been. To this day, many students take the long way round after dark.
