Comayagüela General Cemetery

Francisco Morazán · Honduras · Cemetery

At the capital's old cemetery stands a bewitched tree where a duende appears to the night guards.

The old cemetery in Comayagüela, twin city of Tegucigalpa, is a declared national historic monument holding graves from the nineteenth century. The guards who work there tell of laments and moans rolling through the walkways after nightfall, and of a "bewitched tree" where a duende — a malicious little being of Honduran folklore — is said to appear. The site comes up constantly whenever Hondurans list the country's most haunted places. Few dare cross the grounds alone after dusk.
