A hotel built after the hurricane of 1900. A grieving bride is said to haunt room 501.

The Galvez on Seawall Boulevard is the oldest hotel on Galveston Island. It opened in 1911, eleven years after the hurricane that destroyed the city and killed somewhere between six and twelve thousand people, and it was built as part of the effort to prove Galveston still had a future. During the Second World War the hotel was taken over by the coast guard for two years.

One haunting centres on the grieving bride Audra, who around 1955 is said to have waited in room 501 for her seafaring fiancé. When she believed his ship had gone down she took her own life in the tower, even though he had in fact survived. In room 501 there are reports of taps and telephones switching themselves on and an unseen presence on the bed.

Room 505 is the one everybody asks about. Most people who stay in it do not stay the whole night. Those who do describe being profoundly uncomfortable rather than frightened. The smell of gardenias comes and goes in and around the room. A scent is an unusual form for a report to take and a persuasive one, because it cannot be seen out of the corner of the eye and it does not depend on the light.

Two other figures are reported in the hotel. It is open, and both 501 and 505 can be booked.
