A stranger kept winning, but hooves showed beneath the table – and only a hymn could drive him out.

A merchant at Strand on Nesna was a keen card player. One evening some men sat in the outbuilding when a stranger took a seat at the table and won constantly. When someone dropped a card and bent down, the stranger was seen to have hooves, and in the next moment a dog sat in his place. The men were terrified, but the merchant struck up 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God', and by the third verse the dog had to leave – grown so large it barely fit through the door.
