Among the ruins of King Henri Christophe's grand palace, the monarch's restless spirit is said to wander still.

Sans-Souci in Milot was built in 1810–1813 as the residence of Henri Christophe, the revolutionary hero who had himself crowned king of northern Haiti. The palace was meant to rival the grandest courts of Europe, but Christophe's rule grew ever harsher, and in 1820 – paralysed by a stroke and facing revolt – he took his own life on the palace grounds, by tradition with a silver bullet. The earthquake of 1842 left the palace in ruins that were never rebuilt. Among the crumbling staircases and columns, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the king's restless spirit is said to wander still.
