The night guards at Acre's citadel are said to avoid certain parts of the building once darkness settles over the old city. Visitors to the museum tell of disembodied voices, footsteps in empty corridors and figures glimpsed in the cells — as if the prisoners never left the vaults. Most talked-about is the gallows room, where the executions were carried out and where the gallows themselves still stand.

The citadel was raised in Ottoman times on top of the Crusader city's vaults and served as a prison under both the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate. Thousands of inmates were held here in harsh conditions, in cells built into medieval walls several metres thick — the sound has nowhere to go.
