The crew of horror film Raaz was kept awake by furniture dragging upstairs – until reception showed them there was no upstairs.

Fernhills Royal Palace in Ooty was built in 1844 as the Maharaja of Mysore's summer residence before becoming a luxury hotel. Its most famous ghost story dates from the 2002 shoot of the Bollywood horror film Raaz: choreographer Saroj Khan's dance troupe was kept awake all night by what sounded like heavy furniture being dragged back and forth on the floor above. The phone to reception was dead, and when they went down to complain, the staff walked them outside and pointed up – above their rooms there was no floor at all. Sceptics suspect movie promotion, but staff and guests have kept reporting unexplained noises in the old palace.
