Behind seven kilometres of city wall on India's westernmost edge lies the ghost town of Lakhpat, whose fall folklore blames on a holy man's curse.

Lakhpat on Kori Creek was once a bustling port town said to turn over a hundred thousand coins a day – hence its name. When the 1819 earthquake made the Indus River change course, trade died, and today only a handful of families remain inside the vast, almost intact city wall. Local legend holds that a curse fell upon the town after its ruler Fateh Muhammad plundered a neighbouring town ruled by a revered pir, whose spirit is said to keep watch over the ruins to this day. Wanderers among the abandoned homesteads speak of whispers on the wind and the sense that the town never quite emptied of its dead.
