Assam · India · Haunted site
In the village of Mayong on the Brahmaputra, India's black magic capital, sorcerers are said to have turned people into animals for centuries.
Mayong in Morigaon district has been called the black magic capital of India since medieval times. Rulers are said to have summoned its conjurers before going to war, and folklore holds that the village tantrics could make people vanish, heal and curse – even transform a stranger who wandered in into a goat or a tiger. The knowledge has by tradition been passed down through generations, and old manuscripts of spells are kept today in the village's own museum of magic. Many in Assam still take care not to offend anyone from Mayong – just in case.
