Mullingar House on the ridge towards Landour was built in 1825 by Captain Frederick Young, the Irish officer who founded the hill station of Mussoorie and named the house after his home county. When Young finally returned to Ireland he left his life's work behind – but according to locals, never entirely. On full-moon nights a rider in old-fashioned uniform is said to appear on the grounds, and residents of the now weathered building have told of footsteps and hoofbeats when no one is there. The tale of the riding captain has clung to the house for nearly two hundred years.
