Sudhabay Kund

Rajasthan · Indien · Haunted site

At this holy pond outside Pushkar an annual ghost fair is held, where the possessed are brought so that spirits can be driven out into the sacred water.

Sudhabay, a small site by the village of Ganahera just outside the pilgrim town of Pushkar, is a place where folk belief holds the veil to the spirit world to be thin. Families travel here with relatives thought to be possessed, and every year a veritable ghost fair – the bhoot mela – is held, complete with mass exorcisms. Priests chant mantras while the afflicted are dipped in the spring's waters, and the tormented spirits are said to let go and remain by the pond. Locals themselves bathe in the kund for protection against the restless forces said to hover over the site during the fair.
