The Kelardasht Ghost House

Mazandaran · Iran · Haunted house

The hilltop villa is said to have been raised in a single night – with no two matching windows, a mysterious iron cage and sounds no one can explain.

On a hill in the village of Kolume in Kelardasht, amid the green mountains of Mazandaran, stands a half-finished three-storey villa Iranians call Khaneh Arvah – the House of Spirits. No part of the house is symmetrical, none of its dozens of doors and windows match, and inside there is a large hole in the floor and an iron cage several metres long whose purpose no one knows. Rumour has it the house was raised in a single night, and unexplained sounds are said to drift from the hill after dark. Some believe the bizarre architecture was designed to scare the curious away from hidden treasure – others that something else lives there.
