The White Lady Sólborg haunted Höfði so persistently that the British ambassador persuaded the Foreign Office to sell the house.

Höfði is the white Art Nouveau villa on Reykjavík's waterfront where Reagan and Gorbachev met for the 1986 summit – but the house is at least as famous for its ghost. The poet and judge Einar Benediktsson, who lived here in the 1910s, claimed he was haunted by Sólborg Jónsdóttir, a young woman who had poisoned herself after a notorious abuse case in which his ruling went against her. When the house later served as the British embassy, ambassador John Greenway complained of the 'White Lady' and bumps in the night, and in the early 1950s persuaded the Foreign Office to sell the property. Today Höfði is used by the City of Reykjavík for official receptions – and the stories of footsteps in empty rooms live on.
