Every 4 December, Baroness Laura Lanza's bloody handprint is said to reappear on the wall of the room where she was murdered in 1563.

The castle of Carini outside Palermo was the scene of one of Sicily's most famous honour killings. On 4 December 1563, Baroness Laura Lanza, married off at fourteen, was killed by her own father Cesare Lanza after being caught with her lover Ludovico Vernagallo - her death certificate is preserved in the town's mother church. Legend says that in her death throes she braced a bloodied hand against the wall, and that the print reappears on every anniversary. Her white-clad figure is said to roam the halls searching for her father, and the story lives on in the folk ballad of 'la Barunissa di Carini'.
