Bianca Lancia, locked in the tower by Frederick II, is said to still appear in the castle where legend says she took her own life.

Frederick II's mighty castle at Gioia del Colle, south of Bari, carries one of Apulia's most tragic legends. The emperor's beloved Bianca Lancia was allegedly locked in one of the towers, accused of infidelity while pregnant with their son Manfred; in despair at the insult she is said to have cut off her breasts, sent them to the emperor on a platter and taken her own life. Historians object that the real Bianca married Frederick on her deathbed, but within the castle the throne hall and tower are pointed out, and older townspeople swear to having seen her pale figure drifting through the halls. The castle is today a national museum.
