Gorizia Castle

Friuli-Venezia Giulia · Italy · Castle

On Gorizia's castle hill hunts the White Lady – a countess whose body the devil claimed, and whose hounds tear apart anyone who meets her.

The medieval castle crowning Gorizia has for centuries had a reputation for harbouring supernatural beings. Most feared is the White Lady, said to be Countess Caterina Gara, the Hungarian wife of Count Enrico of Gorizia. After her husband's death – rumoured to be by poison – the greedy countess lived on alone in the castle with a single servant, who never even gave her a burial; instead the devil is said to have seized her body and soul. Unlike other white ladies, Gorizia's revenant does not merely forewarn of misfortune: whoever crosses her path is said to be torn apart by her spectral hounds.
