The king's commoner wife, Bela Rosin, is said to still drift along the walls of the royal castle of Moncalieri.

This imposing royal castle outside Turin was a favourite residence of the House of Savoy and is now a World Heritage site. It was here that King Vittorio Emanuele II fell for the poor girl Rosa Vercellana, known as Bela Rosin, whom he later wed in a morganatic marriage that never made her queen. Her ghost has reportedly been seen again and again at night, drifting along the castle walls, to the alarm of the carabinieri stationed in the building. According to another legend she is searching for her daughter, said to have met her death at the castle.
