Old Celleno, perched on its tuff crag between Viterbo and Orvieto, was abandoned in stages after centuries of plague outbreaks, earthquakes and crumbling ground, until an evacuation order in 1951 emptied the village entirely. What remains is a petrified medieval landscape around the Orsini castle and the deserted piazza – one of Lazio's most evocative ghost villages. Legends speak of spirits among the ruins, including Pope Clement VII, who had ties to the castle, and local tales of unexplained phenomena led paranormal investigators to sweep the village with instruments in 2019. In myth, the name derives from Cilenia, daughter of the legendary King Italo.
