The medieval village on the slope of Monte Tifata has a ruined Norman castle and a round keep, the Torre dei Falchi, the falcons' tower. Countess Siffridina, married into the kin of Frederick II and countess of Caserta, loved the village and spent long stretches here. When Charles of Anjou took the kingdom she refused to abandon the Hohenstaufen, was imprisoned in the castle of Trani in Apulia and died there in March 1279, around eighty years old. What she grieved most, the chronicle says, was being kept from Casertavecchia. The legend takes over there: at her death the spirit came home and took up residence in the keep. When it is quiet between the cathedral and the ruin, her steps and the words she speaks are said to be audible. The village also carries a long tradition of fairies and spiritelli in its lanes.
