One of Rome's saddest walks ends in this little square beside the old convent. Lorenza Feliciani was scarcely more than a child when she married the much older Cagliostro, and it was she who finally went to the Holy Office and denounced him for heresy. She was shut up in a convent herself and died in poverty, never having seen him again. Legend says she must now repeat the same route night after night: from Piazza di Spagna, across the Tiber and into the alleys of Trastevere, a black veil over her face and a weeping that is heard long before she is seen. Those who have met her say she never lifts the veil, and that the air behind her smells of wet wool and snuffed candles.
