Campiello del Remer
Venedig · Italy · Urban site
Fosco Loredan beheaded his wife Elena before the doge's own eyes. On full-moon nights with a north wind he is said to rise holding her head.
This small courtyard on the Grand Canal looks peaceful, but legend sets a jealousy killing here in 1598. Doge Marino Grimani is said to have passed by and heard a woman scream: it was his niece Elena, trying to escape her husband Fosco Loredan. He accused her of infidelity, and despite the doge and his guards he seized a sword and struck off her head. On the way to prison Fosco broke free. He hunted down the place where his wife's head was being kept for burial, took it with him and threw himself into the Grand Canal. His body was never found. Venetians say he still rises from the water at Campiello del Remer on nights of a full moon with a tramontana wind, holding Elena's head in his hands.
