A voice in the inner courtyard whispers its own name. During renovations a night watchman is said to have been stopped by it at the edge of an open shaft.

Palazzo Grassi was raised on the Grand Canal around 1748 and is today an art museum. Legend places here a young woman who fell from the balustrade of a balcony above the inner courtyard and died; whether she jumped or was pushed nobody could say. Venetians call her lo spirito gentile, the gentle spirit, because she has never harmed anyone. What is told of her is instead concrete and kindly: a calm woman's voice that pronounces its own name in empty rooms, and that calls visitors by theirs. The most repeated episode dates from a renovation, when a night watchman is said to have heard a cry in the dark and stopped one pace short of an open shaft in the floor.
