In Palladio's villa on the Brenta canal, Elisabetta Dolfin – locked away for thirty years by her husband – is said to still appear at dawn.

Villa Foscari, designed by Andrea Palladio in 1559 for the Foscari brothers, has long borne the nickname La Malcontenta – the discontented one. The name is tied to Elisabetta Dolfin, who after rumours of infidelity was allegedly banished here by her husband Nicolò Foscari, living her final thirty years in total seclusion, never seen leaving the house. Her ghost is said to appear at dawn in the Armida room and the riverside garden: a pale woman in a long black dress with red hair and eyes full of longing for freedom. The legend has made this elegant Renaissance villa one of the Brenta canal's most talked-about haunted places.
