SSS Curve
Okinawa · Japan · Road
Beyond the triple S-curve above Fuchaku lies the old training ground of the shamans — where not even the island's own spirit-seers dare to go.
On a narrow mountain road above the beach resort of Fuchaku in Onna, three S-curves follow in quick succession, and the letters 'SSS' once painted on the guardrail gave Okinawa's most notorious haunted spot its name. Beyond the rope barring the end of the road is said to lie an old training ground of the yuta, the island's traditional spirit mediums, and the site's power is held to be so strong that even experienced yuta avoid it for fear of being afflicted. Visitors report black shadows crossing the road, voices from the forest, ringing ears, sudden dizziness and nausea, and handprints on their cars. Islanders warn against so much as stopping at the curves after dark.
