In the mists around the French palace hotel on Bokor Mountain, the dead of the ghost town are said to wander – labourers, soldiers and ruined gamblers.

High above the Gulf of Thailand, the French inaugurated the luxurious Bokor Palace in 1925, the crown of an entire mountain resort with casino, church and post office. Around nine hundred forced labourers died during the brutal road construction, and Cambodians came to call the place the ghost city. Legend tells of gamblers who lost everything at the tables and threw themselves from the cliff behind the hotel, and when the fog rolls in the colonial dead are said to drift through the deserted halls. War emptied the station twice before it was left to weather in the cloud forest.
